How to use the random word generator
- Pick a word list
Nouns, verbs, adjectives, or things to draw. Or paste your own list, such as this week's spelling words.
- Choose how many
Three words is the default, which suits story prompts. Set it to 1 for drawing and acting games.
- Spin
The wheel lands on the first word and the rest appear in the result card, in the order drawn.
- Keep going
Turn on No repeats to work through a whole list without seeing any word twice.
What to do with random words
Story starters
Draw three nouns and write a short story that uses all of them. Add an adjective for a twist.
Drawing games
The Things to draw list is all objects, animals, and foods that can be sketched in under a minute.
Charades
Spin a verb and act it out without a sound while the others guess.
Vocabulary practice
Paste a word list and spin to choose the word a student defines, spells, or uses in a sentence.
Brainstorming
Stuck on a name or an idea? Pair two random words and see what they suggest.
About the built-in word lists
The built-in lists are short on purpose: 82 nouns, 66 verbs, 60 adjectives, and 63 things to draw, all everyday words that kids and adults both know. In a game, a rare word just stops the fun, so you will not find dictionary oddities here. Every word on the lists is family friendly.
To use a bigger or more specific set, paste it into the box. Up to 500 words fit on the wheel, and your list is saved in this browser. For a single letter instead of a word, use the Random Letter Generator. To split players into teams before a drawing game, try the Random Team Generator.
Frequently asked questions
Are the words picked at random?
Yes. Words are drawn with crypto.getRandomValues and rejection sampling. When you ask for several words, the list is shuffled with a Fisher-Yates shuffle and the first ones are taken, so every set of words is equally likely and no word repeats within a draw.
Can I add my own words?
Yes. Type or paste any words, one per line, up to 500. Your list stays in this browser, and Copy share link sends the same list to someone else.
Which list is best for a drawing game?
Things to draw. Every word on it is a concrete object, animal, or food that most people can sketch quickly. Set How many words to 1 and turn on No repeats so nothing comes up twice in one game.
Can I put this wheel on my website or in Google Slides?
On a website, yes. Press Embed this wheel and copy the iframe code. Paste it anywhere that accepts HTML or embed code, such as a blog post, a Google Sites page, or a course page in a learning platform like Canvas, Moodle, or Schoology (some schools turn embeds off, so check with your admin if it does not show). The embedded wheel keeps the entries you had when you copied the code, and visitors spin it right on your page.
Google Slides does not accept iframe code, so the wheel cannot run inside a slide there. Copy the link code or the share link instead, add it to a slide, and click it while you present. Slide and whiteboard tools that accept embed code or a web address, and PowerPoint with a web viewer add-in, can show the live wheel.
