      How it works

How to flip a coin online

      1. Flip

Press Flip, tap the coin, or press the space bar.

      2. Watch it land

The coin tumbles in the air and lands on heads or tails. The result is written out under the coin as well.

      3. Flip more at once

Set Coins per flip to any number up to 10. Each coin is its own independent toss.

      4. Track the run

The tally counts every flip since you last reset, with your current streak and longest streak.

      Ideas

      When to flip a coin

      Two-way choices

Who drives, which movie, who gets the last slice. Any choice where both options are fine.

      Sports and games

Kickoff, first serve, or who makes the first move in chess or checkers.

      Probability lessons

Have the class guess how often 10 coins show exactly 5 heads, then flip 10 coins twenty times and compare.

      Making up your mind

Assign each option to a side, flip, and notice whether you feel relief or regret.

      Streaks

Why streaks happen more than you expect

People expect heads and tails to take turns, so a run of five heads can feel rigged. It is not. In 100 fair flips, a run of five or more in a row happens almost every time, and a run of six or more happens about four times out of five. The coin also has no memory: after four tails, the next flip is still 50/50. The streak counter lets you see this for yourself.

      FAQ

      Frequently asked questions

      Is this coin flip fair?

Yes. Each coin uses a value from crypto.getRandomValues, turned into heads or tails with the same unbiased method (rejection sampling) used across this site, so each side has exactly a 50% chance. Research on real coin tosses has found a slight tendency for a coin to land on the side that started facing up. This one has no such lean.

      Does it save my tally?

Yes. The tally, streaks, and the last 40 flips are kept in this browser's local storage until you press Reset tally. Nothing is sent to a server.

How many coins can I flip at once?

Up to 10 per flip. The result card shows how many landed heads and how many landed tails.

      Does it work on phones?

Yes. Tap the coin to flip it. Once loaded, it works offline too.
